Historically NBA in March can get a bit off the rails. Tanking is in full force (Hi Jazz!), and when analyzing injury reports it now goes beyond Doubtful/ Questionable/ Probable, we need to factor in the team situation. Teams clearly in the playoffs, or clearly out of the playoffs, are far more likely to keep a questionable guy out. Teams in the thick of playoff races need every game and will try and get their guys to go. Here are four schedule spots this week that target some playoff races.
The Orlando Magic start the week in Houston against the Rockets, who will be without Amen Thompson. Orlando has the size to battle Houston inside, but Jalen Green is also due for some shooting PROgression (otherwise known by fantasy people as positive regression to the mean - like they don’t realize PROGRESSION is a word). The theme for the Magic? Road warriors! All four of their games this week are away, with three matchups against top-10 defensive teams—expect some slugfests and low-scoring battles in the Eastern Conference Play-In purgatory. Look towards UNDERS as every game is a get up spot for defensively led teams.
The Indiana Pacers step into the brutal back-to-back schedule previously held by the Spurs and Bucks. They play four games, all in back-to-back sets, with two full days of rest in between. Two are against the Bucks, a crucial matchup in their bid for home-court advantage in the first round. Props-wise, I like Giannis’ over in points as high-usage forwards have consistently feasted on Indiana’s interior. If this Hali injury lingers into next game, look to back the Pacers on opening lines to start the 2nd B2B. If Hali returns then, thats instant +CLV.
The LA Lakers will be without LeBron James for at least two weeks due to a groin strain, and Luka Dončić is also dealing with his own back tightness. Expect an increased role for Austin Reaves behind Luka, and Dalton Knecht getting more opportunities. The Lakers face the Nets before a tough road back-to-back against the Bucks and Nuggets. Is it time to fade the streaking Lakers, given the talent disparity against both contenders? REAVES ASSISTS ALL DAY!
The Denver Nuggets have a clear path to snatch the #2 seed from the Lakers. After their mini-series against OKC, they return home to face the Wolves (with an ailing Rudy Gobert), the shorthanded Lakers, and the Lizards. Prop-wise, I like Russell Westbrook’s PRAs, especially with Aaron Gordon re-aggravating his calf injury that kept him out for 19 games this season. And Denver is probably a must back for their game vs LA later this week.
