It is the NBA All Star Break and obviously that means I am traveling. I am actually visiting my grandpa right now for his 95th (and my 33rd- we share the same bday!).
Before I left, OF COURSE we recorded the 3rd? 4th? More than that? Annual All Star Draft and released it on the podcast feed on Wednesday (linked below). This is by far the best way to bet on the NBA All Star Weekend.
I looked at the odds for the 3pt contest on Fanduel. If you calculate the market hold for the lines being offered, it is north of 14%. The “market hold” is just a technical term for rake rate for the book/casino; FanDuel is expected to make $14 on every $100 bet into the 3pt contest. Thats nearly 3x as much kickback for the book as compared to a normal NBA game.
DO NOT BET THAT SHIT!!! The +odds you receive for picking a single contestant is still no where near “true odds” for what that bet is worth. It is nearly impossible to be able to make up the value difference in obtaining an edge when betting so far off true odds. Yikes.
Instead, find 2-3 friends, draft teams of every contestant from all of the events, and if your roster of All Star participants has a category winner, your friends pay you a set amount. This allows you to still bet on the weekend while completely avoiding paying this ridiculous vig to a sportsbook. I’ve been doing this for over 5 years with Austen, we brought Gibby in 4 years ago, and we’ve been recording it as a podcast since I started the show 3 years ago.
